RetroInk on the X4 Pro
New in 0.6.0. The X4 Pro is the newest device RetroInk runs on. It has had less use than the X3 and X4, so expect some rough edges and please report them on GitHub.
The Pro has no front buttons. RetroInk is drawn for it with a touch-first layout: the same System 6 windows, with a tappable Back box in every title bar, direct taps on rows and days, and swipes for paging.
What you have to work with
- The touch screen. Tap, hold and swipe. Two-finger pinch resizes text in a book and a two-finger twist rotates the page.
- The Home key (capacitive, under the screen). A short press goes Home. A long press opens the reader menu while you are reading.
- Two edge keys. They move the highlight in lists and turn pages in a book. Tap a row to open it; there is no Select key, so tapping is how you choose.
- Power. It keeps its own short and long press actions from Settings > Controls. It no longer doubles as Select.
Getting around
- Back is the box at the left of every title bar. A swipe in from the left edge also goes back.
- The key bar at the bottom shows only what the screen needs, such as Options, Shuffle or New. Many screens have no key bar at all.
- Lists open on a tap. Nothing stays highlighted until you press an edge key, which brings the highlight back.
The quick panel
Swipe down from the top edge, or tap the battery and clock corner of any title bar.
- Brightness and Warmth are scroll-bar sliders: drag the square, or tap the arrows to step.
- The I | O rocker turns the light on and off.
- The row of keys is Home, Stats, Sync, Dark mode, Prefs (global settings) and the Touch toggle for the reader. Home is there for anyone who has given the Home key another job. Sync offers book progress, nearby position sync, sending a book, and Sync Stats for reading stats between readers.
- Close it with the close box, or by dragging the striped tab at the bottom up.
Reading
- Tap the left third of a page to go back and the rest to go forward, or swipe sideways.
- Swipe up from the page to open the reader menu. It is a drawer with five tabs: font, layout, more, bookmarks and settings.
- Hold a word for about half a second and a highlight starts under your finger. Drag to extend it and lift to save it as a clipping. If you let go without dragging, that word is looked up in the dictionary instead.
- Pinch to change the font size, twist with two fingers to rotate.
Other things that work differently
- Library. Tap a book to select it, tap it again to open it, hold it for its actions. Swipe sideways to page through the shelf and use the edge keys to switch shelves.
- Desk Calendar. Swipe sideways to change month, tap a day, then tap the events listed below to open the Day View.
- Sleep screen picker. Swipe or tap the sides to step through the screens and tap the middle to use the one on show.
- Focus Session. The length and your goal have on-screen step buttons.
- Date picker. Tap a field and use its minus and plus buttons; hold to repeat.
Desk Accessories on the Pro
The Pro has a clock chip, so it has the Clock, Moon Phase, Earth and Desk Calendar without asking for a date, plus the reading-stats sleep screens.
- Minesweeper is new and only on touch screens. Tap to dig, press Flag to make taps plant flags instead, and tap a number whose flags are all placed to clear around it. New Game is in the Menu, so it can’t be tapped by accident. The first dig is never a mine.
- Marble Maze is not on the Pro, because it needs a motion sensor the Pro does not have.
Known limits
- Updates: Check for Updates finds the Pro file in the same release as the X3/X4 one, so once it is installed the Pro updates over Wi-Fi like the others. The first install is by hand, as described in Installation.
- A page of dense text is refreshed a screen at a time, as on any e-ink reader, so very quick taps can queue up.
- Some screens in the reader still use the reader’s own font in the drawer panes instead of the System 6 face.
